In Mass and Individually, We Are Beautiful – Lady Gaga

Someone, who has experience fighting for her emotional and behavioral health, advised me to listen to Lady Gaga – Born This Way.  She said, “Don’t be scared by it!  Just listen!”

So I did.  And then I did again.  Her message is not, “Don’t stress out.  Don’t work hard.  Just be who you are.”  It is rather, “Figure out who you are and embrace that fully.”  By her own example, she tells us to work harder than anything else on embracing that.  Gaga says, love this unique self and respect it openly and privately.  She tells us that we are all beautiful in mass and individually.

So let us know what you think!  Is her message our message here at FriendtoYourself.com?  Are you uncomfortable with loving yourself so well?  Please tell me your story.

  1. Good message but I think she and I may not share the same language.

ps. now I know how aliens are derived.

  2. I agree with Cindy. I’d just as soon the message didn’t come from someone I don’t understand, but the message is great. I think, though, that figuring out how to love one’s self, although it’s the most important step in learning how to care for that self, is the most difficult step. When we’re struggling with mental illness (and, therefore, too often, being stigmatized) it’s hard to stand up tall and say “I love me. God loves me. I’m okay.” The good thing about self-care is that, no matter where we are on the scale of “I love me”, we are finding a way to love ourselves more each day and we know that embracing who we are is a never-ending process. This, incidentally, from an absolutely exhausted woman in a full fibromyagia flare who is learning, through self-care, to push through the pain and exhaustion and celebrate the fact that the last three weeks that got her in this condition were totally worth it!! 🙂

    • hey stranger. been wondering after u. glad u r touching in to ease the rolling eyeballs.
i like especially about your comment, “no matter where we are on the scale of “I love me”,….” there’s a lot of room for allowance in that.
so sorry to hear about your pain and fatigue. keep on!

      • Rolling eyeballs??? And pain and fatique are part of who I am. Doesn’t feel good but, with the self-care I’m learning so much about, the pain and fatique don’t depress me as much. They actually seem to make me stronger. But thanks for caring. That always helps. 🙂

  3. In all honesty, I ‘ve never paid much attention to Lady Gaga, music or person. However, I have many nieces who think she’s great! Learning to embrace who we are is a wonderful message. May we all become comfortable in our own skin.

  4. Funny, I was thinking about this song while reading your work the other day. “Don’t hide yourself in regret/ Just love yourself and you’re set…”

I think it’s great to embrace yourself to the fullest, as long as you don’t base it on whether or not other people accept you… it feels like there’s such a fine line between accepting yourself for who you really are and not just who you would like to be…

  6. I’ve read some things about her as of late, as well as watching the 60 Minutes interview today, and she is a smart lady for all but 25. She is the real deal behind the performance.

(as an aside, a friend just started a blog…I think you may find it interesting.. Icryforthewomen.wordpress.com
    cheers ~)
