Robin Williams saw me through my developmental years. His prolific cinematic accomplishments, whit, depth of character, courage in living with and dealing with mental illness – all this configured him into my life story. Never even thought about him dying. Until he did.

My wife and I were at a hotel in Tokyo the day Robin Williams died. I was sleeping in a connecting room having an awful dream about suicide. I don’t recall the details of the dream, but I woke up shaken by it, and I laid in bed trying to shake off the thoughts of it. My wife opened the door to our adjoining rooms to see if I was awake that morning, and then told me that Robin Williams had died. The first words out of my mouth were “Did he kill himself ?”. My wife said no one knew yet but were speculating he may have . She then asked me why I would ask that and I told her I had just had a terrifying dream about suicide. Was that a coincidence I was having a dream about suicide when he died ? Was it a premonition? I don’t know, but it is the only time in my life I have ever had a dream about suicide. It still haunts me a bit to this day.
Thank you Dr. Q for choosing to be a psychiatrist. There are very few psychiatrists with the insight, compassion, and drive that you have to treat those suffering from a mental disease.
